Social media is just one of the tools in your marketing mix, but it’s a tool that is gaining momentum every day and businesses need to get on board.

And a Facebook page is Social Media 101 – from there you can branch into Twitter, Linked In, YouTube and more.

It seems everyone who’s anyone has a Facebook page these days, but can it really help improve traffic to your company website?

In short, yes. But you need to be prepared to put in the effort to make it work.

Anyone can set up a Facebook page and it’s relatively easy. All you need to do is go to the Facebook homepage ( and instead of signing up as an individual, you scroll down to the link “create a page”. From there, the prompts lead you through the process.

Your page can be customised to include a welcome (landing) page, a contact tab, portfolio, blog and more.

You can include information about your business, your website, your products or your service, as well as photos, videos and web links.

As a Facebook page administrator, you can post comments, links and, even more importantly, you can respond directly to any clients, or potential clients, that post on your wall. Facebook can also be integrated with your own, website, blog or email marketing services account, so any newsletter/blog posts will be automatically uploaded. And people can “like” your page from your main website.

It also has a great analytical tool – called Insights – which lets you see how your page is tracking in regards to new likes, regular users and comments. In addition, when you post a link or comment or anything Facebook will tell you how many “impressions” the post got.

The final, and most compelling, reason to jump on to Facebook, is that search engines (specifically Google) are now recognising Facebook updates in their complex algorithms which determine your ranking when anyone searches on your product or service.

Some other issues to consider:

  • Facebook is a great way to encourage two-way communication with your customers or potential customers
  • It can help you gather feedback and promote customer interaction
  • It  is a great way to generate site links and drive traffic to your website
  • Pages can be customised to suit most business types
  • It gives you another avenue for keyword rich content to improve your search engine ranking

If you do decide to jump into Facebook, remember what we said above – you need to put in the effort to make it work. This means regular updates and also searching out other Facebook pages that might complement your business. If you “like” them, they will probably reciprocate, growing your fan base and giving you access to more potential clients.

Facebook is littered with “dead” pages – don’t let yours be one of them.
