WHAT IS A DOMAIN NAME ?

A domain name is your address on the Internet. Like any address, it is important for the success of your business that you use, promote and protect it so that customers can find you easily. More than this, your domain name is your online-identity and brand – your customers won't just know you as Your Company Inc., they will know you as "yourcompany.com" or "yourcompany.com.au"

HOW MANY DO I REGISTER ?

Many companies are now actually registering more than one domain name ie: yourcompany.com and yourcompany.com.au and yourcompany.biz domains.  The reasons for this are many - most importantly it would allow you to use them for marketing etc and more importantly it protects your identity and company from competitors.

WHAT TYPE OF DOMAIN NAME ?

You can choose to register both or either a global domain name like yourcompany.com or an Australian one like yourcompany.com.au  Additionally alternatives like yourcompany.biz amongst others are available.

Global domain names

.com, .net and .org domain names can be registered by any organisation or individual anywhere in the world. So long as the name is available, you may register it. ie:  yourcompany.com

Australian domain names

The .au domain has undergone some changes recently, which make it much simpler for businesses and individuals to register and maintain Australian domain names. You can register an Australian domain name such as yourcompany.com.au, yourcompany.net.au, yourcompany.org.au, yourcompany.asn.au and yourcompany.id.au However you must have an ABN or ACN. One of the following is applicable for registration:

.com.au A second level domain exclusively for Australian businesses. To be eligible for a .com.au domain name, registrants must be: an Australian registered company; or trading under a registered business name in any Australian State or Territory; or an Australian partnership or sole trader; a foreign company licensed to trade in Australia; or an owner of an Australian Registered Trade Mark; or an applicant for an Australian Registered Trade Mark; or an association incorporated in any Australian State or Territory; or an Australian commercial statutory body.
.net.au A second level domain for network and internet based companies such as telecommunication companies, Internet service providers, Web hosting companies and so on.
.org.au “org” represents “organization” and org.au domain names are only available to verified non-profit entities. This is the domain of choice for many of Australia’s charities such as Red Cross..
.id.au A second level domain for individuals who are Australian citizens or Australian residents.
.asn.au asn.au is available to organisations that qualify in the broad category of associations. This includes incorporated associations, political parties, industry bodies and sporting groups.
.name domain names

The .name domain space is the only gTLD exclusively for people and personal names. This means that you can now have a Web address in your ..name or ..name. For example, a .name domain name will look like this: Jack.Wilkins.name or Wilkins.Jack.name.

The added benefit of buying a .name domain name is the personal email address! Nothing is more convenient than an email address in your own personal name for you to stay in touch with your family, friends, and colleagues around the world. When you register a .name domain name you also get a .name email address along with it. The email address is automatically derived from the name that you register. From the above example, the .name email address will look like this: Jack@Wilkins.name or Wilkins@Jack.name

.biz domain names

Introduced in 2001 as an alternative to .com domain names yourcompany.biz can be registered by any organisation or business anywhere in the world. So long as the name is available, you may register it.

.us domain names

US is the newest internet address for both corporations and individuals who reside or trade in the United States of America. Now you can register a great web address such as www.yourcompany.us for a company or www.janesmith.us for an individual.

.co.uk domain names

If you mainly deal with companies in the UK and wanted to register just one domain then a .co.uk domain may be the best choice. The yourname.co.uk instantly identifies you as a UK company and often, given a list of URL's in a search engine, people will choose a domain / URL with their country code.
